SHALLOW WATER WHACKERS

Mat Woods has continued his good form on RH Fisheries' Weston Park lake, with another four fish haul from his most recent session.

Continuing with the prototype 24-7 Sonubaits boilie, Mat has been keeping the bait going in whilst the venue has been frozen and his hard work has paid off with a mid-double and three more 20s to 29lb.

"The water level is up by another foot or so, which has opened up more of the lake to the fish," Mat explains. "I went up mid-week and baited an area of overhanging bushes quite heavily on a hunch, and sure enough when I arrived at the weekend the fish were there.

"The swim hasn't been fished for ages and with other areas of the lake stitched up I was like a kid in a sweet shop."

Mat continued his 'six bait trick' offering just a small scattering of half a dozen baits over each rod and didn't have to wait long for his first bite.

"Within 10 minutes my right hand rod was away. This was placed in just one foot of water and the fish exploded the surface as it got hooked. Playing it in such shallow water was good fun and I soon had another big Weston 20 at 29lb in the net."

The Korum Brand Manager followed this up with a 22lb common later that day from the same spot, before things went quiet as the temperature cooled.

"The next day we had snow in the morning followed by warm sunshine. I thought I could see fish cruising in open water, so I plopped out six baits and just watched the spot for signs. A fish kicked up a plume of silt over the bait so out went a rig to the area. Within the next hour, I had mirrors of 22lb 8oz and 15lb from that spot, which was a real bonus."

Mat caught all the fish on Sonubaits' new Pineapple and N-Butyric Pop-ups, fished on very short Chod rigs. His setup also included 1.1oz Avid Flat Swivel leads.
